When you want to quit, take the next step forward.
Once again, it’s after midnight and the thought of putting
pen to paper fingers to keyboard made me want to quit. 7 days of writing with another 24 left and I was ready to throw in the towel. At least for tonight. It’s just one day, right? But much harder would it be to write tomorrow? So, here I am, with my husband sound asleep next to me and my computer warning me that my battery has 14% left…pondering life, goals, and lack of motivation.
Why do we quit?
Is it because we are lazy?
We lack of motivation?
We can’t see the reward?
Or, maybe we are just bored?
All of the above? Yes. And more. There’s always more. Right?
We all have our own unique reasons for wanting to give up. But what about our reasons for persevering? For staying in the race? I read a quote today that said something like “It doesn’t matter how long it takes, as long as you are moving forward.” (unknown)
tonight this morning, I write. It may not be especially stellar writing. In fact, it’s possible no one will actually read this. (If you are, bless you!)
But. I’m choosing to keep moving forward. Taking the next step. Putting down a few random thoughts before I officially lay my head down on my pillow and try to sleep.
Tomorrow is a new day. And, I want to face my new day knowing I gave my best today…even if it’s like squeezing blood out of a turnip. (Who came up with that phrase, anyway?)
So, tonight, Friend, I ask the question of you.
What is that one thing you are wanting…hoping…to accomplish?
What is one step forward you can take in making it a reality?
Does it feel too big? Aim a bit smaller. It doesn’t have to be huge. It doesn’t have to take a lot of time, or effort. It just needs to be a step in the right direction. By the way, that direction would forward. (Smile.)
You can do it!
Sure, giving up may feel like the easy way to go. After all, there is no effort in giving up.
But. There is great loss.
When we let go of our hopes, our dreams, we lose out on all the amazing things God wants to do in and through us. It may feel like the easiest, safest, less scary option to give up. I get that. I struggle with the temptation to give up every.single.day.
But, here’s the thing, that tiny bit of relief we feel when we choose to give up? It won’t last. It will quickly turn to guilt, or shame, or regret, or worse, disgust. It’s NOT worth it.
Especially when you compare it to the AMAZING feeling that results when we choose to take that next step forward.
When we choose to do the hard thing, especially when our flesh is screaming at us to ‘just quit,’ we are rewarded. Joy, peace, a sense of accomplishment, and an incredible feeling of victory follow. As well as the inspiration to take one more step.
Tempted to quit? Don’t. Just take that next step.
You got this.
